Falling squarely into the category of specialty shops that we never suspected the existence of, Hanaizumi Gardens is dedicated entirely to owl ornaments. Carved wooden owls and porcelain owl figurines fill most of the tiny shop, along with a bit of artwork and a few owlish knick knacks such as keychains. The goods are imported from all over the world - we saw owls from Thailand and Indonesia, Greece and Portugal, China, the US, and various parts of Latin America.
The shop appeared to be deserted when we visited on a recent weekday, but the sign on the door said "enter freely," so we did. No staff were on hand, but presumably there was someone in the back within calling distance in case we found something we wanted to buy.
Mysteriously, the shop seems to be run by a company that makes precast concrete formwork for construction projects. They claim that this is one of only a few owl ornament shops in Japan - but we suspect that that may be an understatement.
