Hapineko: Tokyo Shibuya

The large-size playroom at "Happy Cat" has a homey, lived-in feeling to it, comfortably furnished with plenty of sofas for visitors and a heated floor mat for the sixteen resident cats. It's very quiet though, and a bit somber - there's no music, and the staff tend to speak in hushed voices. The cats seemed pretty subdued too - many were awake, but perched on the heated floor unmoving, in Sphinx-like poses.

There also seem to be more rules than usual here - for example we were asked to roll up our trouser legs once and then again, and to keep our slippers on at all times. Visitors are asked not to play with cats that are wearing collars, which indicate that they're off-dury and taking a break. Sometimes the cafe closes early on weekends if the cats seem tired.

If you want to boost your popularity, optional cat treats and "cat string" are available for Y100 each. As with most cafes, weekday visits are recommended; weekends and early evenings are especially crowded times thanks to the cafe's convenient location.
